Almost half of the men after 50 years old and almost 80% of men after 70 years old have an enlarged prostate. An abnormal enlargeent of prostate gland may develop into prostate cancer in later stage.
What is Prostate gland?
It is a walnut-sized small gland in men that helps make semen. It is located just below the urinary bladder it wraps around the urinary tract. It tends to grow larger as we get older. If our prostate gets too large, it can cause a number of health issues.
Because it surrounds part of the urethra, the enlarged prostate can squeeze that tube. This causes problems when you try to urinate. Below are some of the symptoms of enlarge prostate:
-
Frequent or urgent need to urinate
-
Difficulty starting urination
-
Weak urine stream or a stream that stops and starts
-
Inability to completely empty the bladder
-
Urinary tract infections
Prostate cancer have similar symptoms as BPH. It is advised to check for prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels frequently to detect cancer early. PSA is a protein secreted by the prostate glands. Higher levels of PSA indicate enlarged or inflamed prostate gland. If PSA level is over 10, chances of having prostate cancer are 50%
